Biruntha is an intellectual property management and technology commercialisation specialist with broad experience in technology transfer and commercialisation domains. She is also a registered patent, trademark and industrial design agent with the Malaysian Intellectual Property Organisation. Biruntha had an eventful career with reputable organisations in intellectual property management, open innovation, technology commercialisation, marketing strategy and managing national driven programs in the technology transfer and IP commercialisation areas by supporting and facilitating universities, research organisations and companies from various industries.

Biruntha started her career in IP as a patent specialist with one of the leading IP firms in Malaysia, Patrick Mirandah & Co. She gained extensive experience in the preparation, drafting and prosecution of patent applications for the ICT, semi-conductor, electronics and electro-mechanical domains.

Succeeding her career in patents, Biruntha joined British Telecoms (BT), UK’s largest telecommunication company, as an Industry Partnership expert where she specialised in technology transfer and commercialisation of BT’s R&D in the South East Asia region, developing strategic partnership channels for BT with the local government based agencies, universities and private organisations. In addition, she had the experience of extracting commercial benefits from R&D and identifying potential licensing opportunities for BT. She was successful in managing a multi-million ringgit R&D grant which focuses on innovative R&D for BT’s Digital Home and 21CN technologies, established licensing opportunities for Malaysian SMEs and conducted major IP commercialisation centric tradeshows in peninsular Malaysia. She has evaluated and consulted over 300 Malaysian SMEs in the ICT spectrum through BT’s Open Innovation Programme. Biruntha expanded her career by accepting a regional role as a Marketing Director with an ICT company. She was responsible for the company’s marketing and IP strategy, MSC corporate affairs and also led the commercialisation grant initiatives.

Currently, Biruntha plays a dual role as the Vice President and Head of IP Commercialisation Services in PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM). She successfully managed a national programme called the High Impact Programme 2 – Technology Commercialisation Platform under the SME Masterplan 2012-2020 from 2014-2016. She is actively involved in the commercialisation of intellectual property rights at national level arising from stakeholders such as universities, public research institutes and SMEs where she has contributed significantly on the establishment of technology transfer and IP commercialisation best practices in Malaysia. Biruntha is also an IP Valuation specialist who leads a team of IP valuers.

Biruntha was appointed as a member judge of the International Panel of Judges for Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX), Malaysia in 2006, 2008 and 2009, 2016. She is also a member of the Malaysian Intellectual Property Association (MIPA) and a qualified patent, trademark and industrial design agent with the Malaysian Intellectual Property Office. She is also a certified patent drafter by FICPI under the South East Asian FICPI Patent Drafting Course (SEAD). Biruntha has an MBA from Victoria University, Australia and a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science from Coventry University, United Kingdom.

Nalni graduated from University Technology Malaysia with a Masters in Engineering Business Management. Prior to accepting this position, she was working in NanoMalaysia Berhad as Assistant Vice President in the Business Development unit. She has approximately 7 years of working experience in strategic sales and marketing planning & execution, new business development & corporate joint ventures, product development, subsidiaries business management and corporate governance. She is well equipped with strong technical and business experiences management qualifications.

Nalni is also experienced in professional dealing with both business-business and business-client engagements in terms of making business initiatives, attracting new clients, seizing new business opportunities and developing strategic partnerships in various industries such as science & technology, real estate and equipment/machinery.

Elina M. Isa
Intellectual Property Manager

Elina’s expertise lies in the area of Intellectual Property. While her forte is in patent protection, she has also gained experience in handling design and trademark applications.

Prior to joining PlaTCOM, over a span of 15 years, Elina was a Patent Specialist in three Intellectual Property boutiques in Kuala Lumpur, where she managed patent portfolios for a wide range of local and international notable clients; including Aventis Pharma, DuPont, Sanofi, MIMOS, and Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB).

Elina has gained extensive familiarity in strategic IP protection, patent drafting for various types of inventions as well as patent prosecution in Malaysia and international jurisdictions; including the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). In view of a more contentious side of IP, she has considerable experience in providing patent validity and freedom to operate opinions for local and international clients such as DuPont and Procter & Gamble.

Elina holds a degree in Biotechnology from Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Abdur Rahim Sirajudin

Rahim’s expertise lies in the area of Intellectual Property; primarily in patent, and followed by trademark, industrial design and copyright matters. Rahim is well versed to provide prior art & novelty search report, patent drafting for various types of inventions; and freedom-to-operate (FTO) opinion and validity opinion for pre-litigation works. Rahim is also well versed in filing and prosecuting patent applications in Malaysia and other foreign jurisdictions such as United States (USPTO), European (EPO) and Japan Patent Office (JPO) and many more. Rahim was also exposed to filing and prosecuting trademark, industrial design and copyright applications in Malaysia and foreign countries.

Prior to joining PlaTCOM, Rahim was a Patent Specialist in a major IP boutique firm in Kuala Lumpur, where he managed patent portfolios for a wide range of local and international notable clients; mostly in chemistry, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Rahim has accumulated about 8 years of experience in IP prior to joining PlaTCOM.

Rahim has gained extensive familiarity in strategic IP protection, conducting prior art searches for novelty, patent drafting for various types of inventions as well as patent filing and prosecution in Malaysia and international jurisdictions; including the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).

Rahim holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

Ms. Nur Hazwah Mohd Amin

Nur Hazwah Binti Mohd Amin is a Senior IP Executive in PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn. Bhd. Holds a degree in Industrial Biotechnology from Universiti of Selangor (UNISEL). Have 6 years of experience in handling IP matters especially in Patent for local and international clients. She has also gained experience in handling trademark and industrial design applications.

Prior to joining PlaTCOM, she had joined two Intellectual Property boutiques in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur as Patent Executive and Paralegal respectively where she managed patent portfolios including MIMOS, MARDI, Sime Darby, Telekom, LGM and also local universities such as UTM, UPM, UKM, UteM, UIA and UPSI. She also had experience in handling patent search workshops for local universities and Agensi Nuklear Malaysia.

Hazwah has gained familiarity in strategic IP protection, patent drafting for various types of inventions as well as patent prosecution in Malaysia and international jurisdictions including Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Phang S.P. is a Senior Executive of Intellectual Property Service with thirteen years of working experience. Having graduated from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) with a Bachelor degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, he worked in a world renowned multinational company for several years as an engineer, after which he furthered his study in Yuan-Ze University of Taiwan, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Communications Engineering.

Prior to joining PlaTCOM Ventures, he served in several prominent Intellectual Property firms in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, where he worked with renowned British and Malaysian patent attorneys. He is well-versed in intellectual property knowledge and patent prosecution. Dhana graduated from Multimedia University, Melaka with a Bachelor of Law (Hons). Prior to accepting this position, she served as a Legal Assistant and last position as IP Head at Thompson Associates. She has more than 4 years of working experience – diversified experience in legal, trademark and patent.

In Thompson Associates, she was tasked in handling trademark prosecutions portfolio in Malaysia and overseas as well as conducting trademark/proprietor search and drafting submissions/arguments in response to office actions. She was also responsible in managing patent portfolio and filing of patent/PCT applications and assisting in foreign filings.

Nurul Syazrina Mohamad Anil Sha

Syazrina is a Senior Executive at PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn Bhd. Her current practice focuses on advising clients on patentability of inventions, conducting patentability searches and IP due diligence, drafting patent specifications, prosecution of patent applications and maintenance of clients’ IP portfolio.

Prior to joining PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn. Bhd., Syazrina served as Patent Engineer at a prominent IP agency, PRO IP Sdn. Bhd., where she gained substantial experience in handling patent matters for local and international clients in diverse technology areas. She has attended various IP courses and seminars both locally and abroad including the FICPI South East Asian Patent Drafting (SEAD) Course and the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA) IP Practitioner Seminar.

Syazrina enjoys doing research work, during her postgraduate studies, she has presented and published a number of research papers on stereoscopic 3D image and video processing at various IEEE conferences while serving as a research assistant at Multimedia University. She has also gained considerable amount of industrial experience in Component Engineering Department (R&D Division) at Sony EMCS Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. Exposures in active research environment has sparked her interest towards patent works which led her to venture into the field of IP.

Syazrina holds a Master of Engineering Science and a Bachelor of Engineering Electronics degree, majoring in Multimedia, from Multimedia University, Malaysia. She is also a registered member of Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).

Ms. Arularasi Thenarasu
Executive, Intellectual Property Services

A graduate in Biotechnology, Arul is responsible for conducting patent searches, drafting patent specifications, and handling prosecution of patent applications both local and international, here at PlaTCOM.

Arul successfully completed a research pertaining to the awareness of genetically modified (GM) food among the residents of Nilai, Malaysia for her final year thesis. Prior to graduation, she was a trainee in Asia Pacific Special Nutrients Sdn Bhd during which she was exposed to research and development efforts related to animal fecal and feed sample. Apart from that, she was given an opportunity to conduct a research on the Beta-carotene response in Anabaena cylindrica towards various combinations of toxicants which are commonly found in the environment.

The research exposure and in-depth knowledge of intellectual property rights has equipped Arul with the necessary skills for advising clients in the niché domain of life sciences and biotechnology.

Arul also manages IP audit exercises and preparation of patent landscapes for organisations.

Sherry graduated from University Kebangsaan Malaysia with a Master’s Degree in Law. Prior to accepting this position, she was working in UKM Technology Sdn. Bhd. as a Legal Manager. In that role, she was tasked to manage multiple teams & projects, drafting, handling and executing all agreements, copyright & trademark application with MyIPO.

Sherry has a thorough knowledge of commercial contracts, corporate agreements & matters and IP related matters. She is also a registered Trademark Agent and a member of IP Community of Japan Institute for Promoting Invention and Innovation (JIII).
