Lantibiotics; bacteria-derived compounds with potential as antimicrobials
Project Code: 179
Antimicrobial compounds are agents that kill or inhibit the growth of microbes. Improper use has led to microbial resistance to these compounds, which is why there is a constant need for new compound development. This innovation uses bacteria-derived compounds called lantibiotics as antimicrobial compounds.
The innovation involves the production of lantibiotics from a commonly occurring bacterial strain, using three different culture methods, namely liquid culture, semi-solid culture and biphasic culture. The genome sequencing of the producer strains showed no virulence factors reflecting safety of these bacteria to be used as a source of lantibiotics.
