Project Overview

This technology presents a simple and direct biodiesel production system which applies simultaneous cooling and microwave heating to enhance production. It also utilizes marine microalgae as feedstock.

This one step micro-biodiesel production under simultaneous cooling and microwave heating is reported for the first time. Several parameters (cooling effect, solvent ratio, reaction time, microwave power input and temperatures) were optimized during the simultaneous microwave and cooling system with a specially fabricated double jacket reactor.

 

This one step micro-biodiesel production is simple, saves energy and has high productivity where high lipid content from microalgae was transesterified to biodiesel without dewatering process. One step micro-biodiesel production under simultaneous cooling and microwave heating can displace the conventional method (water bath heating) and the recent microwave heating method. In addition, the simultaneous cooling and microwave heating can be more efficient and saves more energy than the widely used multistep process in the current biodiesel production from waste cooking oil and plant oil.
